Craniofacial Anomalies and Rare Syndromes (Interdisciplinary Clinic)
A central focus of clinical research is the interdisciplinary diagnosis and care of patients with congenital craniofacial anomalies (e.g., cleft lip and palate, oligodontia) as well as rare craniofacial disorders, in collaboration with departments such as oral and maxillofacial surgery, human genetics, pediatrics, and otolaryngology. During a specialized clinic session, findings are recorded longitudinally, evaluated clinically and through imaging, and the course of treatment is documented in a structured manner. In cases of conspicuous craniofacial phenotypes, we aim to conduct a systematic human genetic evaluation (gene panel analyses/whole-exome sequencing) to provide a mechanistic basis for diagnosis and therapy and to enable personalized care pathways.
Digital Orthodontics and Digital Treatment Planning
Another key area of research is the evaluation of digital workflows in orthodontics. The Department of Orthodontics conducts clinical studies to examine the quality, fit, and efficiency of CAD/CAM procedures for the fabrication of orthodontic appliances—particularly retainers—including potential side effects and clinical outcome measures. In addition, in collaboration with the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, clinical studies are being conducted on digital planning and outcome assessment in patients with severe dysgnathia—with a view to eventually incorporating AI-based methods for treatment planning and quality control.
Patient-Centered Health Services Research and Quality of Life (LIFE CHILD)
The Department of Orthodontics addresses patient-centered issues in health services research in collaboration with the Department of Pediatric Dentistry. As part of the Leipzig LIFE CHILD study, researchers are specifically investigating how dental and jaw malocclusions, as well as facial and dental asymmetries, influence oral health-related quality of life in childhood and adolescence. The goal is to translate these findings into evidence-based prevention and treatment strategies.
