Treatment of pronounced jaw misalignments

Pronounced jaw misalignments (dysgnathia) can, e.B. if the jaws do not fit together correctly or the upper jaw is incorrectly positioned in the middle face, usually not only be treated with braces alone. If your dentist has diagnosed you with dysgnathia or you suspect it, you are welcome to introduce yourself to us for an initial consultation.  In cooperation with the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, a combined orthodontic-maxillofacial surgery treatment concept will then be developed. The appropriate pre- and post-treatments are planned and carried out by us.

The dysgnathia consultation hour is a joint consultation hour of orthodontists and oral surgeons to advise patients in whom the tooth and jaw misalignments cannot be corrected by a purely orthodontic treatment and thus require a combined orthodontic-maxillofacial therapy.

On the basis of the findings from the clinical examination, the analysis of plaster models of the upper and lower jaw, the evaluation of the remote X-ray image and, if necessary, a model operation, the patient is suggested the optimal treatment for him.

The orthodontist explains to the patient the type and scope of the orthodontic pre- and post-treatment. In this conversation, he gets all the information about the type of anomaly, the therapeutic procedure, the benefits and risks of the therapy as well as possible alternative therapies.

On the part of the oral surgeon, the type and scope of the surgical procedure is explained to the patient on the basis of a skull model. The surgical procedure for the individual surgical techniques is explained in detail. The patient is informed about the possible risks and complications of the procedure as well as about the expected duration of the inpatient stay and follow-up treatment.

The consultation takes place on Fridays from 8.30 to 11.30 a.m. Registration takes place in the secretariat of the Polyclinic for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with Mrs. Wittig under the telephone number: 0341 - 97 21106.

The following documents must be sent to us in advance by the currently treating orthodontist in the case of a referral. These documents serve to prepare for the dysgnathia consultation.

  • current OPG
  • current remote X-ray side image (possibly FR frontal image)
  • current model pair
  • Possible initial models of orthodontic treatment
