In order for the result to remain stable in the long term, so-called retention devices should always be worn after orthodontic treatment. After the treatment, the bone must first strengthen again in the vicinity of the previously moved teeth. In addition, the human dentition is subject to lifelong changes and tooth migration. Removable braces worn at night can maintain the treatment result (retention plates). In the aesthetically important anterior tooth area, thin wires can be glued behind the teeth to additionally stabilize them. Furthermore, there are transparent, thin tooth splints, which also act as a retention device and are usually perceived as comfortable.
