We introduce ourselves

The Medical Informatics Center (MIZ) at the University of Leipzig Medical Center (UKL) plays a key role in advancing medical research within Leipzig University Medicine and beyond. We provide services and tools for the collection, preparation, and analysis of medical data—particularly data from patient care—aiming to facilitate secure, standardized, and advanced use of data by researchers.

Our Mission

MIZ offers expertise and services for data sharing and complex analyses, aligned with the frameworks of the Medical Informatics Initiative (MII) and the Network of University Medicine (NUM) —both federally funded programs. We collaborate with partners across Leipzig University Medicine and beyond to provide a comprehensive portfolio of data services.

In addition, MIZ drives digital transformation at UKL through research projects that ensure high standards of patient care. Working closely with clinical  partners, we design, implement, and validate technical infrastructures and algorithms, which are then integrated into UKL’s system landscape in collaboration with Department 1 – Information Management.

Our Approach

Data is curated and cataloged according to FAIR principles (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable), making it available for projects within Leipzig University Medicine and beyond.

MIZ is a central institution of UKL, consisting of three departments: Medical Data Science (MDS), Data Integration Center (DIZ), and Medical AI and Translation (MedKIT).

Medical Data Science (MDS)

Medical Data Science (MDS) is an interdisciplinary department focused on improving patient benefit. The team develops computational infrastructures for preparing and analyzing medical data, including distributed computing solutions, and applies advanced analytical methods, from classical statistic to machine learning and deep learning.

Data Integration Center (DIZ)

The Data Integration Center (DIZ) consolidates medical data collected at the University of Leipzig Medical Center during routine care and makes it available for research purposes. Derived research findings are then fed back into patient care. It provides dta protection-compliant services for data management and use, which researchers within and outside the UKL can use.

Clinical AI and Translational Medicine (MedKIT)

The department for Clinical AI and Translational Medicine (MedKIT) was founded in early 2025 to develop and operate clinical AIsupport at the UKL. MedKIT serves as the central hub for coordinating all AI activities related to patient care at the UKL.

New AI-related projects and collaborations are thus quickly put into practices. In this area, the department also collaborates and networks with partners outside of the UKL. One such example is the Clinical Decision Support Network (CDSN). Founded in 2025, it connects numerous clinical and non-clinical partners, facilitates collaborations and partnerships on AI-support, and fosters the development of joint infrastructures.
