Title of trial:
A randomized multicenter open-label controlled trial to show that mucous fistula refeeding reduces the time from enterostomy closure to full enteral feeds (MUCous FIstula REfeeding ("MUC-FIRE") trial)
Objective:
The results of this randomized controlled trial may strongly change the perioperative care of neonates within the pediatric surgical community. If the hypothesis is confirmed, time to full enteral feeds after enterostomy closure and side effects of parenteral nutrition could be reduced in the future. The postoperative hospital stays of infants undergoing enterostomy closure will be shortened, which is associated with health economic benefits.
