Hepatology

The Hepatology Department offers the most modern examination methods and treatment options for patients with diseases of the liver. Outpatient treatment is provided in the Hepatology Outpatient Clinic, the Liver Cancer Center and the Liver Transplant Outpatient Clinic. Inpatient treatment takes place on our ward G 3.2. The care of patients with acute liver failure is coordinated by the Liver Transplant Outpatient Clinic.

Information about the department

Liver disease often does not cause pain, but elevated liver values can be an alarm signal that should be investigated further. A persistent elevation of liver values indicates the presence of chronic liver disease. Chronic liver disease can lead to cirrhosis (scarred liver) and liver cancer, making it one of the leading causes of death in Western industrialized countries. Nowadays, a cure or regression of chronic liver changes can be achieved in the majority of cases, especially if the disease is detected at an early stage.

Therefore, one focus of our facility is the professional and comprehensive evaluation and treatment of patients with elevated liver values and liver diseases. Ultrasound technologies such as Fibroscan and ARFI make it possible to easily assess the extent of liver damage. As a result, liver puncture can be avoided in many cases.

With the goal of making the most current therapeutic options immediately available to our patients and thereby continuously improving treatment, we are conducting numerous national and international studies, particularly in the areas of viral hepatitis, autoimmune liver disease, genetic liver disease, fatty liver and liver cancer (HCC). In advanced liver disease (cirrhosis with and without decompensation, HCC), liver transplantation is the only life-saving measure.

Modern diagnostic procedures are available in the liver outpatient clinic for the treatment of patients. Inpatient treatment takes place on our ward G 3.2. We attach great importance to detailed and personal consultation with our patients as well as individual and interdisciplinary therapy concepts, e.g. with our ultrasound unit and interdisciplinary endoscopy, the Department of Radiology or the Department of Visceral and Transplant Surgery. Thus, proven treatment methods are combined with innovative therapeutic procedures in our range of services - for the benefit and well-being of our patients!

Advice for applicants

The Hepatology Division offers full training to become a specialist in internal medicine. The training is structured with rotations in selected areas of internal medicine, intensive care and the emergency center.

In cooperation with the gastroenterology department, the specialization to become a gastroenterologist can be carried out entirely at our hospital. For this purpose, training is provided in the Interdisciplinary Central Ultrasound Unit and the Interdisciplinary Central Endoscopy Unit.

A main focus of the training in the field of hepatology is the instruction to independently conduct clinical and basic research projects. The Medical Faculty of the University of Leipzig offers support programs to allow freedom for scientific work in addition to clinical duties. In the weekly Journal Club, students learn how to critically examine scientific publications.
