Your stay at our house

Information for foreign patients

The experts in the UKL’s clinics and units also treat patients from around the world, for instance if they are suffering from prostate cancer or cancer of the female reproductive organs. Please find out from the relevant clinic beforehand what formalities will have to be completed in advance for an inpatient stay at the UKL, and how to pay for treatment.

Admission / Discharge

Inpatients who are being admitted to the head clinic, the clinics for internal medicine, neurology or nuclear medicine, or the surgical, gynaecological or paediatric clinics, should report to the central reception desk for new admissions at 20 Liebigstrasse. You will find it on the left in the entrance area just behind the main door. You will be welcomed there by a helpful member of our service and information team, and by a hospital guide. All other patients should report to the appropriate clinic or ward.
When you register, you will sign an admission contract and will also be given information about your hospital stay, as well as other paperwork.
Please remember to bring your important documents with you, such as

  • a referral from the doctor treating you
  • proof of insurance from your health insurance provider (a smart card)
  • your personal identity document
  • records of any chronic conditions from which you suffer
  • if applicable, proof of co-payment exemption

During your discharge consultation, the doctor will answer all of your questions about ongoing treatment and/or subsequent rehabilitation measures, and recommend changes you should make to your lifestyle.

Treatment and care

​Most of your stay with us will be spent in a modern room with an ensuite toilet and shower room, a television and a telephone. In many of the clinics, you will be allocated to a modern twin-bedded room, although some of the clinics have rooms which accommodate between one and four patients.

Most examinations and therapeutic procedures are scheduled for between breakfast and lunch-time; this is also when doctors conduct their rounds. You will notice that our doctors are often accompanied by young people. These are aspiring doctors, or students who are being trained at the university hospital.

During his visit, the doctor assigned to your case will inform you about everything you need to know regarding your condition and your treatment. If you don't understand anything or have any other questions, please ask. If your doctor asks about your symptoms, you should answer as accurately as possible.

Before any operation, a doctor will meet you for a pre-anaesthesia assessment, when he will also familiarise himself with your test results. Together you will decide on the type of anaesthesia to be administered; he will explain the procedure and answer your questions. You should only sign the operation consent form once you have had all your questions answered.

Eating and drinking

eating-and-drinking-university-hospital-leipzig.jpgOur hospital provides full board in the form of a well-balanced and nutritious range of meals. You will be served breakfast, lunch and an evening meal, as well as at least two snacks at other times. You will be able to choose from various meat and vegetarian options. The hospital also has its own restaurant and shop.

Patients are given a free supply of fresh mineral water and plenty of tea and coffee by our care staff every day.

Restaurant, Cafeteria, Bistro

restaurant-university-hospital-leipzig.jpgThere are several bistros, a restaurant and a cafeteria in our hospital. If you consume food or drink there, please take account of your state of health and comply with any diet plans or therapies which have been prescribed.

Interpreter service

​There is an interpreter service available at the UKL. If you want to make use of this service, please tell reception or ask the staff on your ward.

Hospital welfare service

hospital-welfare-service-university-hospital-leipzig.jpgThe hospital welfare service provides patients and their family members with help and support in the event of problems arising from their illness and/or disability which might have a detrimental impact on their lives, whether mentally, physically, professionally or financially. If you have any questions, please address them to the care staff on your particular ward.

Shopping

shopping-university-hospital-leipzig.jpgOn the hospital's premises you will find vending machines selling food and drink, several bistros with a small range of products for sale, the 'UNImarkt', where you can purchase everyday requisites, and a medical supply store which sells, for instance, a selection of orthopaedic items.

Information for visitors

Visiting times at the hospital are flexible, and vary from one ward to another. The care staff will be happy to provide this information to your family members. However, they should leave by no later than 8 pm, which is when we start to prepare our patients for the night.
We may ask visitors to wait outside if an occupant of the room requires a medical examination or nursing care. This is done to protect the personal privacy of every patient.

"Quiet room" - Raum der Stille

quiet-room-university-hospital-leipzig.jpgThe quiet room in House 4 at 20 Liebigstrasse is a place where patients, families and staff alike can go in search of consolation and hope. You can come here if you are feeling low or just want to be on your own for a while – regardless of your denomination.

The quiet room is always open.

The UKL also offers a pastoral care service which offers support, regardless of your faith. If you prefer, we will try to arrange for you to see a non-Christian spiritual leader.
