A professional recognition course for midwives from third countries will start on 01.05.2025. By taking part, midwives from third countries can fulfil the requirements of their official assessment notice. Once the participants have completed the required theoretical and practical parts, they can apply for authorisation to use the professional title 'midwife' in Germany.
The Institute of Midwifery Science and Interprofessional Perinatal Medicine at the Medical Faculty of the University of Leipzig is responsible for the design and delivery of the course.
The course is based on the objectives of the course according to Section 9 HebG and the competencies required for the state examination for midwives according to Appendix 1 HebStPrV.
Aims of the course
This course will help the participants develop the professional and personal skills they need to:
- work as a midwife in inpatient and outpatient settings in Germany.
- work as a freelance midwife in Germany.
Programme of the course
The course lasts a minimum of 12 months and is full-time. The adaptation period is divided into theoretical and practical modules. Individual adaptation is possible. The requirements of the official assessment notice will be taken into account. There is also an assessment interview at the start of the course. The maximum duration of the course is 18 months full-time. In accordance with Subsection 1 sentence 2 of Section 59 HebG, the course concludes with an examination in the form of a final interview.
Theoretical modules
The theoretical content is taught in a mixture of face-to-face and online formats, as well as self-study phases. The face-to-face phases take place at the Institute of Midwifery Science and Interprofessional Perinatal Medicine at the Medical Faculty of the University of Leipzig. The online and self-study phases can be completed from home. Appropriate technical equipment is needed such as a computer, laptop or tablet with internet access. A mobile phone is not sufficient.
Practical modules
The practical training takes place alongside the theoretical modules. They take place in maternity clinics and with freelance midwives or in midwife-led outpatient units. The aim is to provide an optimal link between theory and practice.
Once accepted to the course, participants will receive a personalised timetable.
Due to free places, it is once again possible to apply to take part in the adaptation programme.

This measure is co-financed from tax revenue on the basis of the budget adopted by the Saxon state parliament.
