15.01.2026 - Open Day at Leipzig University

During the university's Open Day, we had the opportunity to present the midwifery degree programme at the Leipzig campus and talk to many interested visitors.
We would like to thank everyone for their keen interest and the pleasant conversations we had on site.

28.08.2025 - We´re celebrating our birthday!

On 28 August 2025, the Institute for Midwifery Science and Interprofessional Perinatal Medicine celebrated its first anniversary in the small lecture hall. Interested guests attended the event, which featured specialist presentations followed by a discussion.

After a welcome by the team, Prof. Dr. Henrike Todorow opened the event with a review of the first year and an outlook on future goals. Prof. Dr. Holger Stepan then spoke about the future of obstetrics and the development of delivery structures. Other presentations dealt with the promotion of breastfeeding in midwifery studies (Claudia Löser-Eichler), competence development through skills training (Bianca Hünlich) and protection concepts in the context of genital mutilation (Simone Schwarz, SAIDA International).

Note:
The event also provided an outlook on the #HebaPäd conference on educational work in midwifery studies, which will take place on 3 May 2026 in Leipzig. Up to 400 midwives are expected to attend.

At the end of the anniversary celebrations, there was an opportunity for questions and personal exchanges. The event highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary cooperation for the further development of midwifery science and perinatal care.

20.06.2025 - Long Night of the Sciences

During the Long Night of Science, experience how midwives work with all their senses to ensure the well-being of mother and child. Feel, hear and see for yourself at our interactive station. Take the opportunity to talk to students and staff about studying midwifery, the fields of work and the challenges of the profession. In a presentation, you will learn everything you need to know about the placenta, an organ that is of central importance for the development of the foetus but often receives little attention. Why the placenta is so important for a physiological pregnancy and what role it plays in the birth will be explained in an understandable way.

Lecture: Placenta: More than just an organ

The placenta is much more than just a ‘supply organ’. It is the vital connection between mother and child. In this lecture, we will take a look at the development, structure and diverse functions of the placenta. We will also look at an often overlooked topic: the rituals with the placenta after birth. The lecture is aimed at anyone who would like to learn more about the biology of pregnancy and the customs associated with the placenta, whether out of medical interest, personal experience or curiosity.
