About us

Pharmacy is an interdisciplinary natural science and a profession with intersections to medicine, chemistry, biochemistry, life and material sciences. The center of university research is from drug discovery to formulation and drug application in patients.

The degree program leads to licensure as a Pharmacist. This opens up all the diverse fields of activity of a Pharmacist with the professional fields of public pharmacy and hospital pharmacy, drug research and development at universities and the pharmaceutical industry, quality control, health administration, publishing houses, associations and in the medical service of the Bundeswehr, among others.

In addition, the academic degree of a Diploma Pharmacist can be obtained in Leipzig.

At Leipzig University, pharmacy is part of the Faculty of Medicine. This assignment is frequently found internationally, but is currently still a unique feature in Germany.

Pharmacy in the dynamic, science-oriented and culturally vibrant city of Leipzig is characterized by a nationally and internationally renowned young team and excellent equipment in research and teaching. Our comparatively small member of students offers excellent individual study conditions.

For teaching, the five departments work closely together, i.e. Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Technology, Pharmaceutical Biology, Pharmacology and Toxicology and Clinical Pharmacy. Every year, a high proportion of former first-year students successfully complete their education.

Pharmaceutical Chemistry

The Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry (Head: Professor Dr Jens Meiler) seeks to fuse computational and experimental efforts to investigate proteins, the fundamental molecules of biology, and their interactions with small molecule substrates, therapeutics, or probes. The Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry is part of the Institute for Drug Discovery.

Clinical Pharmacy

Clinical Pharmacy (Head: Professor Dr Thilo Bertsche) benefits in its patient-related research and teaching from the close cooperation with the University Hospital Leipzig A. ö. R. and other university hospitals (e.g. the University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus Dresden), other hospitals (e.g. the Hospital Sankt Georg Leipzig and the Geriatrics Center Zwenkau), nursing homes and homes for the elderly, as well as general practitioners and pharmacists in private practice.

A particularly close cooperation with the pharmacy of Leipzig University Hospital is maintained in the Center for Drug Safety (Director for Patient Care: Dr Yvonne Remane; Research Director: Professor Dr Thilo Bertsche).

In addition, a new training pharmacy with state-of-the-art technology is currently being set up for clinical pharmacy.

Pharmacology and Toxicology

Pharmacology and Toxicology is carried out by the Rudolf Boehm Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology (Head: Univ.-Professor Dr Michael Schaefer).

As a subject centrally embedded in the molecular, cell biological and medical life sciences, pharmacology and toxicology investigates interactions between endogenous and exogenous substances and biological systems in its research activities.

Pharmaceutical Biology

The Dept. Pharmaceutical Biology (Head: Professor Dr Leonard Kaysser) is part of the Institute for Drug Discovery (IWE). The focus of Pharmaceutical Biology is on microbial biotechnology and technical biochemistry.
