Research

Lipids are essential components of the central nervous system and fulfill functions far beyond their structural roles in cell membranes and myelin. They regulate cellular signaling, metabolic processes, and communication between different cell types. At the same time, the brain maintains a highly specialized and largely autonomous lipid metabolism.

Our research group investigates how neurons and glial cells coordinate their lipid and sterol metabolism and how lipids are exchanged between cells and organs. A particular focus is on cholesterol and other sterols, and on understanding how different lipids exert specific biological functions within the nervous system.

We aim to understand how alterations in lipid metabolism contribute to neurodegeneration and how metabolic adaptations enable tissue repair and regeneration. We are particularly interested in metabolic communication between glial cells and neurons and in the role of lipid metabolism in the maintenance and regeneration of myelin. Ultimately, we seek to identify metabolic mechanisms that can be selectively targeted to promote neuroprotective and regenerative processes.
