1) Scope and rationale

​​Protein compositions in body fluids and tissue are highly complex and change with physiological and pathological conditions. We develop targeted and untargeted LC-MS/MS assays to study protein distributions and profiles in complex biological samples.​

2) Core application area: steroid hormone profiling

A central focus of our targeted platform is the quantitative profiling of steroid hormones. Using highly specific, ISO 15189 and ISO 17025 accredited LC-MS/MS assays, we simultaneously measure glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids, and sex hormones to investigate disturbances in steroidogenesis associated with endocrine disorders, cardiometabolic risk, and sex-specific disease patterns.​

3) Core application area: oxylipins in inflammatory and vascular signalling

We further quantify oxylipins as key mediators of inflammatory and vascular signalling. Derived from polyunsaturated fatty acids, these lipid mediators regulate immune responses and endothelial function. Our high-sensitivity assays enable comprehensive profiling of pro- and anti-inflammatory oxylipins to study chronic inflammation, metabolic disease, and nutritional influences.​

4) Core application area: integrative sterol metabolism profiling

Another major focus is sterol metabolism, including cholesterol, oxysterols, and phytosterols. By jointly assessing endogenous sterol precursors, oxidized derivatives, and plant-derived sterols such as sitosterol and campesterol, we differentiate between altered cholesterol synthesis and absorption. This integrative sterol profiling refines metabolic phenotyping in dyslipidemia, cardiometabolic disorders, and inherited defects of sterol transport.

5) Integrated multi-omics objective

Our overarching goal is to integrate targeted metabolomics with proteomics and transcriptomics in systems-level approaches. By combining precise quantitative measurements with multi-omics data, we aim to elucidate regulatory networks of metabolic pathways and to identify clinically relevant biomarkers for improved disease stratification and mechanistic insight.​
