Course contents
All persons who handle laboratory animals in any way must provide proof of specific expertise for these activities. This applies to animal care staff as well as to persons who kill laboratory animals for further investigations or plan and carry out animal experiments. The Central Animal Husbandry therefore offers courses for employees of the Faculty of Medicine at Leipzig University, usually twice a year, to obtain specific expertise in accordance with Article 23 (a, d) of Directive 2010/63 EU. This is a course for people who kill animals for scientific purposes (category D activities) and a course for people who carry out animal experiments (category A activities). The courses have been assessed and approved by the State Directorate of Saxony (Landesdirektion Sachsen) and are open to all members of the Faculty of Medicine at Leipzig University. In addition to scientific staff, this also includes animal care and technical staff as well as students who are involved in projects on animals as part of their doctorate.
The courses are divided into two parts. You first complete the theoretical part via the digital learning platform Moodle. You may only attend the practical course once you have successfully completed the theoretical part. In the practical course, you must have carried out all the planned practical exercises independently in order to receive a certificate of participation. The practical course has a maximum capacity of 8 participants in order to ensure comprehensive supervision by our specialist staff.
In our courses, we emphasize the 3 Rs, which is why participants first practice on dummies. Among other things, we use so-called skin suture pads with a silicone skin.
