MD / Ph.D. thesis

You are interested in working on a MD / Ph.D. thesis?

Please contact us. A message to Prof Toralf Kirsten is sufficient and will be answered as soon as possible.

What can you expect?

We analyse healthcare data on specific clinical issues. The analysis is carried out in co-operation with specific departments and clinics of Leipzig University Medical Center. You are welcome to contribute your own questions and contacts. The questions we analyse can relate to structured data, such as those arising from clinical documentation or generated with measuring devices (e.g. in the laboratory). We also include image data (CT, MRI, etc.) and text documents, e.g. diagnostic reports. The data is available electronically (no typing!) and is prepared and processed using various methods. If further data is required, which must also be recorded as part of an observational study, we also offer organisational and technical consulting for this.

Basically, we are interested in questions that contribute to early diagnostics and can ideally be integrated into the AMPEL system. We are also interested in image processing, e.g. in close co-operation with radiology and other departments and clinics. The automatic generation of diagnostic letters with new approaches (e.g. ChatGPT) is also a topic in our focus.

We are happy to support you with our expertise.

What do we expect from you?

Your doctoral thesis depends on your commitment. You therefore need a certain degree of interest in the research question and commitment to achieving the goal and thus answering the question posed. We do not expect you to have any knowledge or skills that are part of natural science or engineering degree programmes. You do not need any knowledge of data structures and algorithms or advanced methods of statistics and artificial intelligence, but it does not hurt either. Basic statistical knowledge is very helpful and you should not be averse to computers.

We will train you in the methods to be used. We offer familiarisation with common data science tools and the programming languages R and Python and help you to tackle the research question.
